Birthday - Let Us Deserve To Celebrate It

Every day is the same day. Days differ only in few ways- weather conditions, sunrise and sunset time. Otherwise all the days are same. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This has been going on since billions of years and will continue, till the cosmos collapses. Then why do we treat a day different than other? The difference is not in the day, but in our moods, wishes, outlook, frustration, meetings and non meeting achievements, failures etc. If what makes us feel good occurs on a day, we call it a great day. Otherwise, it can be called as a boring day, or a useless day or whatever.

So, why do we love our birthday? Why do we celebrate it? Why do we feel good about it? I mean most of us. For some people including myself, a birthday may be no different than any other day. So let us talk of people who celebrate their birthday. They do it because they were born on that day. Am I correct? But is their birth a cause of celebration? What have they achieved to celebrate? Billions of people inhabit the earth, so what is so great about a single person?

Coming back to the subject, these are philosophical enquiries that make us understand ourselves, and our relationship with the world better. I would say that if you are a loving person, you are a great person. No matter whether you are neither rich nor famous. I would say that if you can help a person forget his/her pain for sometime, you are a great person. I would say, if you give some money without hesitation for a cause, you are a good person. If you cheer up someone, you are a good person. If you can help the planet better even with a smallest act, you are a great person, and your birthday should be celebrated.

Our birthdays should make us think more of ourselves, our actions, our values, our integrity, our gentleness, our compassion, our goals, our desires, our helping hand, our willingness to wipe away tears and every other act or thought that can make us a better person. We must celebrate our birthday if we wish, but along with day, we must add one more positive quality to ourselves. That will give us greater happiness than any other celebration. One feels worthy and good, only if one is really so. We can fool people in to believing that we are good, but we cannot fool ourselves. For getting happiness in our heart, we must ourselves feel that we are good. Let us decide to add one good quality to us on our birthday and let us celebrate it. Better, let us decide to do one good act everyday. No happiness will match that happiness, because happiness cannot be bought or borrowed. We feel happy and good about ourselves, only if we have self-esteem that comes only from doing good acts.

Alter The Way You Celebrate Christmas By Making Christmas Crafts

Don’t feel that you are talented enough to perform fabulous Christmas crafts? Have you never tried to make a Christmas craft as a gift for someone who you love and admire? Just think how lovely it is to receive a homemade Christmas gift from someone you care about and love. You know you will cherish it always. Wouldn't someone you love feel the same way if you gave him or her a Christmas Craft gift?
Now you can simply carry out your Christmas craft, even if you didn’t order crafts kits, and experience a new way of celebrating Christmas.
I know that it is very easy to purchase ready-made decorations and Christmas crafts, but it is far more festive and fun to make your own special Christmas crafts. Making homemade Christmas cards and Christmas crafts is a great way to spend quality family time together. There are so many fun ideas for homemade Christmas ornaments to give to relatives, teachers or friends. They can be varied to make a number of different sparkling ornaments for your Christmas tree.

Christmas crafts can be made from a variety of materials. If you like working with wood, you can cut out typical holiday designs, like snowmen, Christmas trees, or Santa figures and then spend some time painting to bring life to your Christmas crafts. If it's your first time working with wood as a Christmas craft, start out simply- cut out any shape and make a sign for your holiday guests. You can paint little trees or stars, and print out with a cute Christmas greetings sentences like “Hope all your wishes come True”.

The easiest Christmas craft by all odds is the Christmas card. No one will ever get bored with making his or her own hand-made cards, especially if they are provided with rhyming Christmas greetings and poems. Ideas can be many and easy-to-craft too.

You could always make candleholders. Take a small baby food jar. Wash and allow it to completely dry. Then you could cover it with such things as: buttons, squares of tissue paper in different colors, etc. Add a new, great smelling votive candle to the holder and you have an instant, thoughtful and creative gift.

A wonderful idea is to present family members and friends with creatively framed photographs. You can simply go to a craft store and purchase a number of plain wooden frames. These can then be painted and you can involve your children in making the craft by letting them add a number of stickers for the year, glitter, buttons, or other embellishments. What’s wonderful about the framed picture is that the frame will have been decorated by the child whose picture is inside.

Another Christmas craft idea is the Santa hat. You'll just need red cloth, some fluffy cotton and glue to get this Christmas craft real! Fold the red cloth into a conical shape and stick the edges. Then have a ball of cotton glued at the top and some to border the circular base.
The holiday season is a festive time, and making your own Christmas crafts can really add to the special feeling of that time of year. You don't have to be a pro to enjoy them, all you need is a bit of the Christmas spirit flowing through your body.

Beaded Curtains

Beaded curtains make windows colorful and are especially good if you want a dramatic entrance to a room. They have been used in Asia for many decades and their popularity in the West rose dramatically in the 1960s. A string of beads are hung from a rod and this was used to achieve the perfect bohemian look that was in vogue at that time. Different types of beads were used to make the door/window colorful and attractive.

Besides being used for doors and windows, beaded curtains are also used to divide a room. They are commonly used in small shops or restaurants to cordon off the storage room or kitchen. You can also use beaded curtains to divide you room. They are used to cover open closets, sleeping quarters and storage areas.

Beaded curtains are popular today with the spread of interest in Feng Shui, according to which passing though a beaded curtain will have soothing effects. It is also believed that positive energy is spread when air passes through the beads.

Different types of beads are used in making beaded curtains. These include glass, wood, plastic, bamboo, acrylic and sometimes even crystals and gemstones. Beads are normally cheap and if you don't want to buy the curtain readymade, this is a simple project you can undertake at home. You can use as many materials as you like in varied sizes and shapes.

Beaded curtains are also popular as they are low maintenance. If they get dirty, rinse them in soapy water. If your beaded curtain breaks, you don't have to worry as you can either mend them or since they are inexpensive, replace them with new ones.

Bathing A Newborn Baby

Do you want your baby handed to you immediately after the birth or should he be cleaned first? In recent years most babies were wiped down with a towel immediately after birth before mum or dad got a chance to hold them. Nowadays choice is the keyword! It's your decision.

Research shows that the greasy film covering your baby, vernix, is a wonderful source of moisture for your baby's delicate skin. And if you don't wipe it off, it is reabsorbed. So your baby will be less likely to develop dry skin patches. Pre-term babies have much more of this protective layer than full-term babies.

In the womb your baby is submerged in amniotic fluid, so vernix is absolutely necessary for providing waterproof protection. After birth, however, mother nature may need a helping hand!

Returning home can be daunting for new parents. Giving baby his first bath can be terrifying!

Your baby does not need a special bath although many parents are well tooled up for the new arrival. A clean sink or the big bath will suffice!

Probably the main worry for parents is getting the water temperature correct. After ensuring you have all baby's bits and bobs at hand, such as a changing mat, towel, fresh nappy, vest and clean clothes, place the baby in a safe place.

Run cold water into the bath first.

Top it up with hot water. Swirl the water around to avoid hot spots.

Dip your elbow into the water to check the temperature. It should be lukewarm. As the skin on your elbow is very sensitive it is a reliable way to test the water.

If you like you can add a little moisturising, hypoallergenic, baby bubble bath. Swirl it around with your fingers. Young babies do not need bubbles to play with!

Undress and wrap baby in a warm towel. Holding him over the bath, cup some bath water in your free hand and gently run it over his head. Shampoo is not necessary for very tiny babies as it can irritate their scalp.

Dry the baby's head thoroughly. Babies lose a lot of heat through their heads. Wet heads lose more heat.

Placing baby's neck in the crook of your elbow, and your hand holding the back of one of his legs, gently lower him into the water. (TIP If you are right-handed it is easier to place babies neck in the crook of your left elbow. Holding his left leg with your left hand, wash him with your right hand. The reverse is the case if you are left-handed.)

Some babies hate being bathed but many really enjoy it. He may become so relaxed that he falls asleep!

Cupping some water in your free hand gently trickle it over his body. Your do not need to rub or scrub as babies do not get dirty. They just need to be freshened up!

Be careful as he will get very slippery once he is wet!

Only keep baby in the bath for a short time as he will get cold quickly and never leave your baby unattended in the bath for even the shortest space of time.

Lift him out and wrap him up in his warm towel.

Quickly dry him and place a fresh nappy on him before he has any little accidents!

Finally, give him a big cuddle and dress him quickly...

And there you have it - baby's first bath!

Avoid Weight Gain During The Holidays - 5 Easy Tips

If you're worried about gaining weight over the holidays you're not alone.

The average North American gains 7 to 12 pounds over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Follow these simple holiday diet tips and tricks and you'll avoid the holiday weight gain that afflicts so many other people:

#1 Drink Water - and Lots of It.

Boring I know - but the reason this tip stays around year after year is because it works. Adequate water intake keeps your metabolism humming along at a maximum rate and staves off hunger cravings as well.

In fact many people mistake thirst for hunger and end up eating to quench their thirst. This results in more calories than you body needs and - you guessed it - excess pounds.

Models and celebrities all know about the powerful slimming effects of drinking water which is why you often see them holding a bottle of water in their hands as they dash through airports or stand around at fashion shows.

#2 Increase Your Exercise A Little Bit Every Day

Everyone deserves to indulge in holiday treats. Part of the fun of the holiday season is the amazing treats that are only around at Christmas and/or Thanksgiving.

Accept the fact that you're going to indulge a bit - and then enjoy it! But make sure you make up for it elsewhere by increasing your exercise.

You don't have to double your exercise time or sweat till you fall off your treadmill. Just increase your exercise time a bit every day, maybe ten minutes here, fifteen minutes there. It all adds up.

You'll burn off those holiday treats and easily avoid extra weight gain. I have several girlfriends who have been doing this trick for years and they never gain a pound over the holidays (in fact they often lose a few!).

#3 Cut Back Where You Can At Other Meals

Did you know that the average number of calories consumed by one person during a typical Thanksgiving dinner is 7,100! That's about 2 pounds strictly in terms of calories alone.

But not to worry. All you have to do is make small calorie cutbacks at other meals the week before and you'll easily make up for the extra calories.

For example, instead a huge slice of pecan pie (which normally will run you about 500 calories) for desert, why not try some blueberries mixed with low fat yogurt? Instead of the bag of potato chips you usually indulge in for the big game, why not munch on air-popped, low fat popcorn?

You can save as much as 500 calories and you're still having a salty, satisfying snack.

Bottom line: cut back where you can in little ways. You won't miss the little sacrifices and you can then enjoy your holiday meals - guilt free!

#4 Eat What You Like - But Only A Few Bites

If you absolutely cannot imagine giving up any of your favorite treats this holiday season, give yourself permission to have a bite of everything - but only a bite!

I read somewhere that Jessica Simpson never denies herself any of her favorite foods - but she only allows herself one or two bites. And let's face it the first couple of bites are the best tasting anyways!

#5 Don't Eat After 7:00 pm

Experts tell us that the earlier in the day food is eaten, the more likely it is to be burned off. However when you eat late at night, this food is more likely to be stored as fat.

Celebrities like Oprah use this knowledge to their advantage and refuse to eat after a certain time like 7:00 p.m.

So if you know you absolutely must have a sweet indulgence during the day, try to have it before noon. Then towards the end of the day, snack on healthy, lower carb foods like salads, vegetable broth, fruits or lean protein.

This keeps your metabolism elevated but won't pack on the pounds. I've personally used this trick before every holiday Christmas party for 5 years running and it certainly helps for getting into those slinky Christmas party dresses!

So those are 5 diet tips to avoid holiday weight gain this year. Follow them and you're guaranteed to save yourself the stress of unwanted weight gain. Heck, you'll probably even lose a few pounds, all in time for New Year's Eve!

Are Fake Security Cameras Effective?

Are fake security cameras effective?  The answer is a resounding "Yes."

Fake security cameras have helped to prevent many crimes.  Mounted in high profile, totally visible locations, these cameras are not hooked up to anything, they mostly operate for a long time on batteries and sometimes have a few flashing lights or other obvious characteristics to make them look as if they are doing something.

Many a would-be robber has changed his or her mind about entering someplace illegally after spotting one of these dummy security cameras looking right at them. With today’s technology, an inexperienced thief really has no way to know whether or not he’s looking at a wireless, state of the art surveillance device or a fake security camera. Some of them actually pan back and forth, although these require more frequent battery changes.

Fake security cameras are especially effective in areas that you expect to be covered by security cameras. For instance, many of the cameras in subway stations around the world are fake security cameras and nobody can tell the difference. During hard times, when the crime rates inevitably rise and cities are strapped for cash, the ratio of fake cameras to real ones was about 2-to-1 in some metropolitan areas.

Knowing that the fake cameras would be regarded as real, the fakes were sprinkled in among the real ones to provide an extra incentive for would-be robbers and thieves to practice their trade in another location. Except for the lack of recorded footage provided by the real cameras, dummy security cameras are almost as effective in reducing crime rates in subways as the real ones are.

Antique Firearms (2)

How are you going to store your antique firearms? If you are looking to store your antique firearms, you want to be sure that they are stored somewhere safe, dry, cool, and where someone or some children are not going to find them.

Store your antique firearms in a location where they will be kept dry and cool. This is important because the finish on many types of guns can become pitted and rusty if you don’t care for them properly. In caring for your guns properly you don’t want to touch them too often, because that can leave excessive oils from your hands on the gun. Dry can cool is important so that the metal doesn’t rust, so the wood doesn’t rot, and so that the value of your gun continues to climb. The value of your antique firearm can grow as it becomes older while in your collection.

Keeping your antique firearms in a location that is not going to be easily found by others will be important. You don’t want your antique firearms to be touched, so that this will keep them in mint condition. In keeping your collection hidden or displayed under glass is going to keep them protected from people from touching them.

You don’t want your antique firearms to be used or shot often either. This is going to keep them in top condition. Keeping your antique firearms under glass is going to keep these items in your collection from being used by someone who may be in the house or visiting the house. If you don’t want to display your items, keep them in a safe, where they will be cool, dry and out of reach of those who may be tempted to shoot them

Keep your antique firearms for as long as possible. If you are just starting out with your collection, you want to hold onto as many antique firearms as possible so you don’t lose out on a complete collection. You may be tempted to sell one to get another, but you will have to determine what type of collection you want to have in the long run.

If you are only going to collect firearms from 1700’s then you should not be holding onto the guns and other types of firearms from the 1900’s. Nevertheless, if you want to build a collection from every ten years between the 1700’s and the 1900’s you shouldn’t sell any of your guns that fit into that range of what your collection will include.

Antique firearms (1)

Antique firearms can be found in the online auctions. If you are searching to add to your collections, you can find the firearms of days gone by in the auctions online. There are many online auctions, such as ebay, or the reverse auctions, but they are all going to lead you to the same place, to where others are selling firearms that are antique.

Antique firearms are the types that are over fifty years old. Sometimes a firearm that is about forty years old is also considered an antique firearm, but it depends on the name brand and the type of gun that it is. Meaning some companies have long since gone out of business, while other type of guns were made as a limited edition type of gun.

If you are looking for firearms that are antique, you might belong to one of the following groups or organizations such as: the NRA, the OGCA, CCA, PAGCA, CADA, or the MAAS. These groups promote the ownership and the use of guns. These groups sponsor many of the gun shows, where you are likely to find guns from the 1800’s or the 1900’s. Some collectors will only purchase guns that are over 100 years old, while other gun collectors are going to seek out guns that are of a certain type that are over so many years old.

Gun shows are where you will find a wide range of guns. From the pistol, to the twenty-two to the shotgun or the mini automatics. Antique guns will sometime also include the guns that are used today, in about another fifty or so odd years. When searching for antique guns or antique firearms, one could also be looking at guns that require powder, and packing sticks but you decide what type of firearms you want to collect and from what year as you start building your collection. No two collections of antique firearms are going to be alike.

In buying antique firearms, you are also going to want to find other items such as the bullets, the powder, and the cleaning supplies made just for that type of weapon. Antique firearms could include those that are one shot or multiple shots. Look for the types of weapons that interest you the most and then you can build your collection from that point.

What other types of topics should one be looking at if they are looking to start building a collection of antique firearms? You should look into how to store your firearms, where you should look for insurance to cover your special collection of firearms; you should also look into information about purchasing locks to keep children away from your antique firearms. Antique firearms are often the types that are cleaned, polished and put to use only under special circumstances. An antique firearm is one that will add that special touch to your collection that brings back a nostalgic time in history to your memory and to add value to your collection.

An Introduction to Futons

Futons have been a fixture of college students’ dorm rooms and other urban living settings for decades.  Futons are stylish, functional, and versatile; they can be integrated into nearly any setting.  Futon beds are lightweight and simple, providing sleepers with a comfortable place to rest.

What most people don’t know is that futon beds originated in Japan.  For hundreds of years, Japanese people have slept on thin futon mattresses placed directly on the floor.  They saw no need to have an elaborate bed with a frame and box spring and headboard.  All that these early futons involved was the thin mattress, small pillows, and a blanket.  In the morning, the futon bed could be rolled up and put in a closet.  Over time, the concept of sleeping on futon beds spread to America.

Modern futons often have adjustable frames and can be used as either a couch or a bed, depending on how the frame is arranged.  The frames are usually made of colored metal, but can be wooden as well.  Futon beds do not needed to be folded out like couch beds, all the sleeper needs to do is push the back of the frame from the upright couch position to a horizontal bed position.  These setups are comfortable in either the couch or bed position and are great for accommodating overnight guests.

Current models of futon mattresses are thicker than the original Japanese models.  They are often filled with wool, polyester, cotton, or soft man made fibers.  They do not have the springs that conventional beds have.  A normal mattress can become uncomfortable over time if the springs do not hold up well to pressure.  This is not a problem with futons because most of them have no springs.

Futon beds have evolved greatly over time.  From their simple beginnings as space saving Japanese beds to their modern multi use models, they are a great alternative to conventional beds.

Accessorizing your mobility vehicle is not just for aesthetics purposes, but also to maximize the use of such mobility aid.

Bigger batteries are heavier and are more expensive. Such rechargeable batteries may cover longer distance but may also require longer recharging time. So, instead of buying or adding extra batteries, try upgrading your old scooter’s battery, this can be a more cost effective option.

Tires may also be customized to withstand rougher roads or longer journeys. Pneumatic tires ensure a comfortable and relaxing ride. For optimum benefits, such tires may also be made puncture-proof to keep them safe and protected from accidental punctures along the way.

Other mobility scooters may include a tiller to be used in controlling the scooter. Delta tillers are actually levers that require pushing/pulling by one hand to move the scooter forward/backward.

A certain holder may be featured in a mobility scooter to contain a walking stick or a crutch that you need to carry along wherever you may go. A holder for oxygen cylinder is also available for the scooter.

Mirrors on the rear view may also be provided to make reverse parking easier to do.

A relatively large bag or a rather small pouch may also be added to the mobility scooter to hold bigger items (grocery/shopping goods) and smaller things (keys/mobile phone), respectively.

Some mobility scooters may come with capes and canopies to protect both the user and the scooter from bad weather conditions. Replacement covers are also available, depending on your scooter’s model and type.

Aluminum or fiberglass foldable ramps for your mobility scooters are also obtainable to help you get the scooter inside the house or up the garage.

Maintenance Issues

After you have finished accessorizing your mobility scooter, you may find it encouraging enough to drive it around. With regular use, it is also important that you know how to properly care for your mobility scooter to maintain its dependable and acceptable performance.

First and foremost, you should be able to follow the recommendations of the manufacturer as stated in the manual of the mobility scooter. Some scooter batteries require recharging every after use while others require recharging only when the battery indicator tells that the battery charge is already low.

Just like typical cars, a mobility scooter will also require regular service and check-up. You can read the frequency of service/check-up that your mobility scooter requires in the manual enclosed in the box when you first bought your scooter. Generally, mobility scooters require annual servicing. Some maintenance checks are necessary every week or every month like pumping the tires up or adding grease to the hubs. Checking the mechanism of the seat is also customary as well as the brake pads.

The frameworks of most mobility scooters are made from steel or plastic and are thus subject to normal wear-and-tear. Mobility scooters can continuously provide freedom and self-reliance. You can make sure of this when they are cared for properly.

A Tad Bit Too Shy: When Parents Needs to Help Emotionally Withdrawn Children

Parents may not be fully aware of what is happening to their children's and their everyday activities. After coming home from work, parents usually do some household chores and prepare themselves for dinner, while their kids do their homework after arriving from school. Conversations would usually begin at dinner time, asking them questions about how their day at school was. Kids may share their quirky experiences to their parents, but teenagers would seldom do the same.

Adolescents would rather keep the details to themselves, and just share random events from their school.  Many parents may be unaware but high school life may be found by their children to be quite a challenge.  Peer acceptance is critical for most teenagers.  In campus, they have opportunities to build new friendships.  For some teens, school is also about facing up to the difficulties of bullying. Other students from school or even their so called “friends” could tease and bully them by saying negative things about them in front of many people. Sadly, this scenario is considered as normal for people their age.  At this stage, your children may be emotionally sensitive and choose to remain secretive about the  issues and situations that they face in school.

In case one of your children is having difficulty sharing stories, opening up, or is showing symptoms of  depression --- that child may be having problems with self-esteem. It is not uncommon for teenagers to experience a form of inferiority complex since the adolescent years are really about establishing self-identity and building their own sense of self-worth. They may also have feelings of resentment, alienation, and unhappiness.  These are only some of the reasons why children hesistate to share their experiences to their parents and other adults.

For parents who think that their children might be suffering from an inferiority complex, it is best to see and know the signs that your child may be experiencing. Your child knows what they are capable of, as well as their shortcomings. Bullying tends to point such negativity into the young adult, and perceives any form of criticism as a personal attack. Feeling bad about themselves, they usually have trouble feeling good with anyone else. They look hard for possible flaws and shortcomings of other people to try to convince themselves that they are not so bad after all.  Response to flattery can come in two ways: desperate in fishing for compliments, while others may refuse to listen to anything positive since it would be in contrast with their own feelings. Another sign is how they project their weaknesses unto others in order to lessen the pain of feeling inferior. If blaming is carried to the extreme, they might think that others are actively seeking to ruin them. People who feel inferior likes to win games, but tend to avoid such situations because deep down, they believe they cannot win. They have beliefs that they themselves are not as interesting as others, and would think that other people would feel the same way about them. These are the most common signs of having inferiority complex, and parents should really take the time to help their children deal with it.  Guiding children and teenagers in terms of their  emotional and psychological growth is critical to the quality of their life.

In order to overcome such inferiority complex, these young adults should develop a strong sense of determination to change their present mentality. Initially, they would require a little initiative, be daring and should give up their inhibition. Parents should remind them that they do not need to be afraid of any body. Try to develop their positive thinking and make them express their views, in case they do not like anything. Always remember that everyone is unique in this world, and individuality is best in leading a good and happy life.

A New Way Sports Fans Can Show Their Loyalty

A lot of sports fans support their favorite teams by wearing hats or uniforms with logos, colors and even mascots on them. If you're looking for additional ways to show your team spirit, how about painting a room with the exact colors of your favorite team?

"Sports fans have a special connection to the colors of their favorite teams," said sport psychologist Dr. Joel Fish, director, Center for Sport Psychology in Philadelphia and an expert in fan behavior. "Paint is another easy way for fans to bring their teams home with them."

To help fans showcase their passion for and support of their favorite teams, The Home Depot now offers a new sports-themed paint program called "Team Colors." Through this program, customers can purchase paint in the exact colors of their favorite professional and college sports teams-even including NASCAR.

Here are a few tips on how to add your team's colors to any room of the house:

• Select a feature wall in an area, usually one without doors or windows, to use as a focal point in a room. This wall could be perfect for accenting. The remaining walls may be painted a neutral color for a contrast with the colorful wall.

• Additional color may be incorporated with furniture painted and accented with color, or with accessories such as lamp bases, fabrics for throws or pillows.

• If your team's colors include metallics such as silver or bronze, incorporate additional items such as picture frames or chairs.

Created in partnership with ICI Paints and the Glidden Brand, Team Colors are available exclusively at The Home Depot stores nationwide.

A Lesson on Halloween

Halloween never has been my favorite holiday. As a kid, growing up on the farm, trick-or-treating meant getting in and out of the car (often on very cold nights) and wearing coats over our costumes. I certainly liked the candy, but it never made much sense to me.

As a father, I must admit I have warmed to the holiday, but I still have a problem with all the focus on witches and ghouls and such. A holiday that focuses on scary things still bothers me just a little bit. I’ve been pleased that my children have typically chosen more wholesome images to emulate through their costumes.

This year was different though. I’ve actually been looking forward to Halloween since the middle of June. I planned. I prepared. I thought and strategized about it. But, it didn’t go quite the way I expected. . .

The Garage Sale

Our community has a neighborhood garage sale each June. By planning everyone’s sale on the same day more people attend and the event is more successful for everyone. For several years my son Parker has had a stand selling lemonade, coffee, muffins and cookies, taking advantage of all of the shoppers who came to our cul-de-sac. Last year, my neighbor Jim and I added hot dogs and other grilled food to the menu. People could shop and get a meal too! We had so much fun; we did it again this year.

Only this year, we secretly decided to give the proceeds to our neighbors who have a son with autism. At our annual party, after the sale, we presented them with about $120 (a lot of money when you aren’t selling anything for more than a dollar!) to give to the autism group of their choice.

Trying Again

The mix of the fun we had and the response we received from our neighbors led to another idea – let’s do this at Halloween. Halloween would be perfect we speculated; lots of traffic (since we always have more than 100 trick or treaters), easy to market (through flyers in the neighborhood), and this year Halloween would be on a Friday. It seemed perfect!

Every few weeks the subject came up. We talked about what to serve and how to market it. Jim, who works in the food brokerage business, got sponsors to provide all the meat. As the calendar turned to October we got more serious and the menu was set: hot dogs, bratwurst, hamburgers and homemade chili.

As I worked on the marketing flyer, all the foods became holiday-themed: Halloweenies, Beastie Brats, Haunted Hamburgers and Chilling Chili. We decided to sell soda and chips. We added a place for kids to bob for apples. We would have the candy from five houses for one stop trick-or-treating. We distributed more than 140 flyers. We were raising money for a great cause. In the final week we even realized we were going to have perfect weather – upper 60’s by “game time.” We had the perfect setup for a successful event.

Halloween is Here

Friday morning Lori and I made the chili. After lunch we finished shopping for the final items. I couldn’t wait to set up! We got everything out – ran extension cords to the street, set up lights, tables and chairs, blocked off the cul-de-sac and fired up the grill.

Two other neighbors were manning the candy – to help the trick-or-treaters get it and to tell them which houses were empty. Parker, age 11, decided to help with the event rather than trick or treat. He would take money and answer questions. Jim would take and fill orders, and I was grill man. We fed the families around us, ourselves and our kids to get the grill going, and they took off to collect candy and good wishes. We were ready.

It got dark, and we had very few trick-or-treaters, and even fewer customers. One mother said she and her son would be back after they were done. We rubbed our hands and prepared for the onslaught.

The onslaught never came.

The Results

By the end of the evening we probably had half our typical number of trick-or-treaters. We sold a little water and soda. We sold a few grilled items. We made $32 (before expenses).

It was a tough night for me. In retrospect, I was as discouraged and disappointed as I can remember being in a long time. It was Sunday before I was really back to normal.

The Lessons

I shook myself out of my self-imposed funk by thinking back on what we did – and what we accomplished. $32. I didn’t even count it until Monday. Truth be told, it was more than I expected at that point. My reflection helped me realize that several positive things happened:

We had fun both planning and doing the event.

We strengthened neighborhood relationships.

We taught our children a lesson about caring and doing things for others – through our actions, not our checkbooks.

We made a memory we will talk about for years.

We learned what might have to change if we do this again on Halloween!

I got the subject for this essay.

A neighborhood shelter got lots of hamburger and hot dog buns.

And we did add $32 to the Riley Children’s Hospital Autism Unit to help them do their work.

However, the best result for me was the lesson of reflection. All the value created by the event was overshadowed in my mind when we didn’t reach our goal. My personal goal had been $300. So, in reality, we did about 11% of that goal. I lost sight of all the good by focusing only on the desired outcome.

If you had asked me Saturday morning if the event was a success, I would have grimaced and quickly said no. If you ask me now, I will say that we didn’t raise much money, but it was fun, and we learned a lot. Anytime you can have fun while learning is a good experience in my book.

We all suffer defeats, challenges and disappointments. Sometimes they are large; sometimes they aren’t. Big or small, I believe there is value and learning in every one of them. Our goal has to be to find those lessons. We only find them by reflecting on the experience and expecting to find them.

Maybe you find yourself reeling from a setback as you read this. If so, please take the message to heart. Maybe the message is more theoretical for you at the moment, that’s OK too. Use this as a reminder for the next time you are discouraged. Lift your head up, reflect on what happened, learn from it, smile and go on!

I don’t know what next Halloween holds, but we already are talking about the garage sale. We may expand to breakfast. I’ll let you know how it goes.

A Guide to Recliner Slip Covers

Your recliner has been a faithful and loyal friend. You’ve spent many hours sitting in it, reclining in it, resting in it. You can’t even count the number of times you’ve fallen asleep in your recliner while watching television. It has been part of the family. When you were down, it silently offered a bit of comfort. Now, you fear you’ll have to part with it. It has gotten old and out-of-date. Its fabric is no longer bright and beautiful. Plus, you’ve redecorated the living room and the recliner sticks out like a sore thumb! Oh sure, it still feels good, but its looks leave a lot to be desired. Don’t worry; you do not have to get rid of your old friend. Just renovate it. Make the old new again. Buy a new recliner slipcover.

Recliner slipcovers are fabrics specially cut and sewn to fit over reclining chairs. They simply fit snugly over your existing material to give you a whole new look. It’s like an instant facelift for the entire room. Visitors will not even know you’ve covered your chair—it will look like a whole new recliner!

Recliner slipcovers generally cost under $100 – or much less if you find one on sale or at a discount store. That’s merely a fraction of the cost of a whole new recliner.

When shopping for recliner slipcovers, pay careful attention to the material. Your recliner gets a lot of use, and it needs a fabric that can handle that. It also moves and bends a lot, so the material must be able to withstand that. Stretch denim, cable knit, velour, chenille, and most elasticized fabrics are good choices.

If your recliner feels great but looks terrible, don’t buy a new one. Consider a recliner slipcover instead. This way, you get a “new” recliner, without the new recliner price.

A Bench that serves its Purpose

A bench doesn’t serve its purpose until it’s a storage box at the same time. Hundreds, even thousands of years ago, chairs were saved for the more important members of society (or ‘chairmen’); leaving the inferior sharing chest-like benches. Eventually, these benches developed four legs, arms and a back and became a more desirable place to sit, especially for children and couples (hence the name ‘love seat’).
The first benches to hold storage were most likely Piano benches, designed so that one or more people can sit and play the instrument at one time, in comfort. Storage is built into piano stools to allow the owner to keep all their sheets of music in easily accessible one place.

To have any furniture that has more than one use is always an advantage and considering people started out sitting on chests, it made sense that those chests were filled. Storage benches open via the seat, which acts as a lid usually spanning the whole length of the bench or two separate lids. Sometimes the lid comes off completely; otherwise it will open just at one side using hinges. Some storage boxes feature lids with prop-ups so that the lid can be opened and will stay there while you use both hands to retrieve what’s inside, without having to hold it open. Storage benches do not have legs, and are supported by the box underneath the seat. Once opened, the storage compartment usually stretches the height of the box, with a base and can hold almost anything. Storage chests can often be seen attached to a wall, underneath a windowsill as a ‘window seat’ and are likely to be upholstered either fully or just on the seat in satin, normal cotton or leather.

However, benches are not confined to being indoors. In fact, a common use nowadays is as a outdoor storage bench, placed outdoors to hold children’s toys, firewood, hay and garden tools amongst other things. Such outdoor benches are very successful as storage boxes, providing the wood they are made out of is treated and varnishes appropriately to avoid rotting, or that they are made from a material that isn’t subject to harsh weather such as plastic.

Also, many decorated storage benches are commonly found in children’s nurseries and bedrooms and are a perfect and attractive place to hold toys or baby blankets. Single-seated storage boxes are sometimes fitted with casters on the bottom to allow the child to sit down and pull up to a desk or scoot around the room. Casters on larger models of storage bench provide a great deal of flexibility and allow for a room to be rearranged as often as necessary or even to transport the contents to a more suitable place.

In general, storage benches provide a place for clutter to be hidden, organised and to be stored in a place that is easily accessed. Their double usage as a seat only makes this piece of furniture more appealing and they are especially useful in houses or gardens with limited space available for extra storage.

10 Tips for Peaceful Crafting with the Kids

Are you looking for ways to keep craft time with your children simple and fun? If so, I hope you will put some of the following suggestions to use.

1. Find the craft the kids want to make and then make a list of all the supplies you will need to make the craft.

2. If you do not have everything on hand add the supplies you need to your shopping list so you will not forget them.

3. Put a plastic table cloth down where you will be crafting.

4. Have all supplies laid out before you announce craft time to your kids.

5. Use non-toxic paints, glues, etc.

6. Have wet wipes and paper towels handy for spills.

7. Always try to have extra supplies in case something is lost or torn, etc.

8. Let them wear old clothes so you will not be stressed out over ruining what they are wearing.

9.Show the kids how to do the craft but let them do it in their own way. If you insist on it being perfect then you might as well do the craft yourself and forget about having craft time with the kids. It also makes the children thnk that everything has to be perfect and that their best is not good enough. Sometimes little hands need help but you know you have gone too far when you are the only one left at the craft table.

10.Have fun! Don't worry about a little paint on their hands & faces, take pictures instead.

I hope you will try these suggestions for a stress free craft time with your children. Show them how to have fun, they will learn how to be stressed out way too soon anyway.

A Classic Toy For The Ages

Throughout the years the toy market has seen many toys come and go but few have the staying power and the unique history of the Teddy Bear. Let’s explore this unique story of this classic toy and a piece of American heritage.

It was November 1902 and our president at the time, Theodore Roosevelt went on a hunting excursion to Mississippi. The trip was business and pleasure: He was there to try to settle a boundary dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana and a hunting excursion for the president, who loved the sport.

But on that particular day, the hunt did not go as planned as President Roosevelt could not find a suitable target to his liking. However, his staff, in an effort to accommodate him, somehow managed to capture a Louisiana black bear cub for him to shoot and tied it to a tree. The thought of shooting a baby bear tied to a tree did not seem sporting to the accomplished outdoorsman and he refused, instead sparing the life of the black bear cub and setting it free.

Mr. Clifford Berryman, a famous political cartoonist for the Washington Star at the time, drew a cartoon titled, “Drawing The Line In Mississippi”, depicting the President letting the bear live, and using the story as a metaphor as for how the president dealt with the boundary dispute.

The cartoon also showed the President with his rifle and his back turned on the cute, cowering, baby bear. This gave Brooklyn toy store owner, Morris Michtom the inspiration for a display for his shop.

He placed a copy of the newspaper cartoon next to a hand-sewn stuffed bear his wife made in the window of his store. To his surprise, he was inundated with customers eager to buy his stuffed bear!

Michtom quickly requested and received President Theodore Roosevelt’s permission to use his name for the stuffed bears that he and his wife were now selling. Thus the “teddy bear” was born, and soon Michtom was producing the bears by the thousands. With the profits from the sales of the teddy bears Michtom went on to form the Ideal Toy Company.

Teddy bears continue to be best friends to children of all ages all over the world. Their mass appeal will never go out of style and they are a true classic to, albeit, with a little presidential help.

Advanced Leather Repair

Cracks in Leather

The only way to un-crack leather is to replace it. One approach that leather repair specialists use is to clean the leather and then re-color it. The result is that the leather will have a uniform appearance. The cracks will still be there but will be less apparent.

You can also have a leather repair professional replace the cracked areas and match the new leather to the original color. This works best when you are working with a panel of leather, for example on a car seat or the surface of a furniture cushion.

Dog and Cat Scratches

If you own a dog or cat, do not allow them on your leather furniture – PERIOD!

For dogs, most damage occurs while climbing on and jumping off. If you are a cat owner, leather fillers or tanner’s resin will cure the symptoms but not the problem.

You might consider buying your cat a scratching post and put it near the area where the cat is scratching before using the filler.

Spray water on the scratch and cover it with a small square of 1000 grit wet sand paper from the hardware store. Sand very lightly until the surface is smooth and you cannot feel the tear from the scratch anymore. You may end up needing to re-color the furniture if the scratch damage is extensive. That would be a job for a pro.

Leather Repair Kits

If your leather has a tiny tear and it's not highly visible, (and if the color is black) any leather repair kit should be sufficient if you follow directions.

However, there are a couple of things to be aware of in case you run into problems. The repair material may not bond well with the leather. This happens if the leather is old or if the heating element supplied with the kit (if it's included) is not hot enough.

Usually, a leather repair kit will contain grain papers that you rub over the repaired area to imprint a grain-like finish. The idea is that the grain will resemble that of the original undamaged leather as much as possible.

Some grain papers are also pigmented. It's difficult to match color but it's even more difficult if the leather is old. Experts say that unless the leather color is black, the repair will show.

You may need to place a small piece of cloth and padding under the tear to help hold the edges together. You can place a piece of material under the tear and glue it with the edges to be repaired as close together as possible. Hold the edges together while the adhesive dries, or use a hair dryer (very carefully) to speed up the process.

Using a leather repair kit will usually hide the tear and hopefully prevent further damage. The problem with using a leather repair kit is the damaged area will always be weaker. The other thing you can do of course is have someone replace the damaged section of leather and match the color professionally.

Stuck Leather

If you have a leather item with sides, such as a purse that appear to be stuck together, look inside to see if you can tell exactly where the sides are sticking. You should be able to see if it is sticking in a couple of places or if the leather is completely stuck shut.

Hold the item over a pot of boiling water – not too closely and do not allow the purse to get soaked. The heat and humidity will expand the pores in the leather and might allow you to work the sides free, just do not force them if they will not budge.

You could also try to work some leather cleaner in between the sides. If there is dirt or other grime that's holding the sides together, this may loosen it. Finally, if getting the sides separated doesn't look easy, take it to a cobbler for repair.

Acrylic paints can be diluted with water

Acrylic paint comes in a tube, just like oil paint. However, since acrylic paint is water-based meaning it dissolves in water instead of oil-based meaning you need to dissolve it in oil or turpentine, it's much easier to clean up after. You can soak your brushes and clean your hands in plain tap water, instead of smelly and flammable chemicals.

Another advantage to acrylic paint is that it dries much faster than oil paint usually overnight. If you're working on a painting that needs to be done on time, that's important. Acrylic paint was developed as a water-based alternative to traditional oil paints.
Acrylic paints can be diluted with water, but become water-resistant when dry. Depending on how much the paint is diluted with water, the finished painting can resemble a watercolor or an oil painting.

Acrylic paint is a fast-drying paint containing pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer resin. Different from oil painting as watercolor is different from oil painting. There are techniques, which are available only to acrylic painters, and there are also restrictions, which are unique to acrylic painting.

Acrylic paints can achieve an oil-paint-like effect, and do so in much less time. Applied to look like oil paints, acrylics are somewhat limited due to the superior color range of oil paints, and the fact that acrylic dry to a shiny, smooth.

Acrylics paints are sometimes used in place of watercolors because acrylics dry closer to the desired color slightly darker, usually, while watercolors dry lighter and often unpredictably, especially for beginning artists.

More inspiration for control freak parents

You cannot catch a child’s spirit by running after it.  You must stand still, and for love it will soon itself return.-Arthur Miller

This became evident to me several summers ago, when I spent 6 weeks suffering with a severe case of hives all over my body.  When the itching first began, the only way to find relief was to lie absolutely motionless.

My kids, who are delightfully self-entertaining, went about their business for the first few hours, checking in on me occasionally to see if I needed anything.  As the day wore on, they realized that I was a sitting duck.  They set up camp on my king size bed, and we proceeded to have some very deep and thought-provoking conversations.

I doubt these interactions would have occurred if I had been my usual productive and bustling self.  I probably would have interrupted the quiet time that was necessary for their questions to emerge in order to jump up and fold the laundry before it wrinkled.

I hardly ever sit still when I’m healthy.  There’s always so much to do.  Hives taught me lots of important things ... not the least of which is that the world will not collapse if I don’t hold it up.  Sure, I fell behind on things.  For the first time in my life I left phone calls unreturned, and dishes in the sink, and laundry wet and wrinkled for days.

But the sun continued to rise and set anyway.  I didn’t lose any friends due to my poor response time.  And my kids learned how to take care of dirty dishes and clothes.

My son is a budding chef, and he had lots more freedom in the kitchen when I wasn’t there telling him what to do or how to do it better.  He was so proud to serve us the delicious meals he had prepared.

I’m sure you know where I’m going with this.  Sometimes the best thing we can do for our kids is drop out and let them experience their own competence.  My kids blossomed during my down time.  I think it was really great for them to feel needed and important; to make a contribution to the family that really mattered.

Yeah, it’s sad that it took a nasty case of hives for me to realize that I was not giving them enough opportunities to experience their own competence, but so be it.  Now I know.  True confessions of a compulsive caretaker.

Testing my lessons learned, I asked my son if he would fix a towel hook that had fallen off the wall.  He seized the mission with zest, gathering all his tools together and tackling the problem with great concentration.

I stayed busy elsewhere in the house and left him alone.  I’ll never forget the look on his face when he came to tell me the job was done.  Not only had he fixed the hook, but he had even cleaned up the mess and put all the tools away!

I’ve realized that the best way to love my kids has changed as they’ve grown older.  It’s not so much about taking care of them anymore.  Now they need opportunities to discover their ability to take care of themselves.

I’ve graduated from being their source to being their resource.  My job has changed from doing things for them to expressing my confidence that they can learn to do things for themselves.

Just in the nick of time, too.  I’ve been craving uninterrupted opportunities to write and think and meditate.  I’m relieved to know that I can take this time for myself without feeling that I am depriving them somehow.

I guess I needed the reassurance that it was ok, even good for them, that I wanted space to myself.  Mama Bird at some point needs to get tough on her babies while getting them ready to fly.  Maybe Mother Nature gives her a helping hand by offering her the tool of irritation to toughen her up so she does what must be done.

Traditionally it’s been hard for me to trust that even my irritation could be ok.  Once more, I have been reminded that all is truly as it should be.  And for that, I am grateful.

A Treat For Bowls Enthusiasts

People today are busier than ever, working long and often unsociable hours, juggling family life with work commitments and rushing around from one thing to the next. Yet many people still manage to squeeze into what ‘spare time’ they do have a hobby or activity that they really love.

There is an incredible range of activities people enjoy, from hugely energetic five-a-side football often played on weekday evening to rambling in the beautiful countryside on a Sunday afternoon. Some activities tend to have a male/female bias – take rugby versus aerobics – while others are perfect for both sexes and also ages.

Indoor bowling is a very popular sport across the UK. A game of skill, patience and tactics, there are in excess of 330 indoor bowling clubs in England with a combined membership of 110,000 men and 54,000 women. And forget that this is a sport for older people – these clubs welcome members from as young as 7 to 80 years plus!

Many enjoy a game during the week along with the social aspects of club membership while there is sometimes the opportunity to take part in tournaments on the weekend. Bowls is not a sport to be hurried, so the idea of a week or two week holiday that combines sport with sun, sea and sand definitely sounds like a break not to be missed.

A company offering that perfect combination is Potters Holidays. A well-established family-run business with a wonderful 5-star UK holiday resort in Norfolk, Potters Holidays offer fantastic Bowls Festival Weeks in the warm and beautiful setting of Cyprus.

Nestled on the West Coast of Cyprus, guests on a Potters Bowls Festival Week will arrive at the old town of Paphos, with its delightful harbour, shops and bars. This great location is home to an excellent, carefully selected 4-star hotel. The Athena Beach Hotel combines luxury and style, with its stunning landscaped gardens, three outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts and mini-golf.

The Potters family pride themselves on offering high standards of service at their UK-based resort and the Cyprus experience is no different. A member of the Potters family will host the week, while members of the team will be on hand to ensure you have an extra special holiday.

In addition there is also an exclusive bowling tournament to take part in, which are optional, free to enter and offer great prizes, organised by Mark Hedges and the Anglia Bowls Team.

This Cyprus holiday is about more than just bowls. During the stay at the hotel there is both daytime and evening entertainment. Cabaret acts and top performers are flown in from the UK exclusively for the Bowling breaks to ensure you entertained by some of the best in the business.

The Festival weeks can be extended to a two or even three-week stay with special breaks available such as the Celebrity Bowls Festival in association with Bowls International Magazine. There is also the opportunity to organise group bookings for ten people or more – perfect for a bowling break for a club.

A Rug Adds a Touch of Beauty to Your Room

We all love to decorate our house in our own way, putting in our personal touch in all the rooms and in every corner. We should not ignore the floors as well. It not only enhances the beauty of the room but also serves as a good place to sit and enjoy.

Weaving was first started in 6000 B.C. Excavations near the Caspian Sea have proved this fact, and rugs were made around the same time as man learnt weaving.

The first rugs were made of rough skin and were used for cave protection. Egyptians were making excellent rugs well in 3rd millennium B.C.

Rugs can be classified in many types according to the material used, the method of making them, the use they are put to, etc. According to the material used, rugs can be simply classified as being wool rugs, silk rugs etc, and they can be classified as per the use they are put to like, Prayer Rugs, Door Rugs, Sleeping Rugs etc.

Wool rugs have become very popular these days among others available. They can breathe new life and beauty into your home without the hassle and expense of a major renovation. They are one of the most desired home luxuries in the world. They are made from the oldest textile fibers – wool, and as wool has always stood the test of time because of its unique natural properties, rugs made of wool have the same benefits. Though there are many other fibers, still nothing can beat the natural properties of wool.

Types of wool rugs:

Wool rugs are of different types ranging from traditional, oriental, Persian, machine made, hand made, and contemporary. Each stands as a masterpiece on its own. The quality and prices of these wool rugs could be different depending on the type of wool, as there are about 200 varieties of sheep. The fiber would vary considerably in texture across the body of an individual sheep, as well as differences based on the sex of the sheep.  It also depends on the nutrition of the sheep, their age and also general health.

The fiber for the wool rugs is selected for durability and long wearing, and is generally harsh in consistency; unlike the soft and delicate fibers used for making sweaters and gloves. The texture of the fiber is dependant on the level of scratchiness that is used in the finished rug, and the quality of finished fiber also depends on the manner it is processed by the rug producers.

Why choose wool rugs?

Though there are rugs made of other fibers, wool stands out from all. Wool usually sets the standard for fine carpet because of the excellent design and the performance. Wool accepts dye to its core, producing colors of depth and long lasting beauty. It is possible that you may have to spend a good amount of money, as wool rugs cost more than the normally available synthetic ones; but wool rugs offer long-term investment returns via enhanced durability, and they are quite easy to maintain.

In terms of wearability, wool rugs have natural resistance to any abrasion and it keeps its original look and feel, be it the color or texture, longer than other fibers. You would have no problem cleaning them as wool is not soiled very easily and can be cleaned readily. Using the vacuum cleaner can remove dirt on the surface and any ground-in dirt. Wool rugs require less frequent and less rigorous wet cleaning than synthetics with responsive spot cleaning and routine vacuuming. Wool rugs can be of great help in keeping the temperature warm or cool depending on the season, as wool is known to keep the environment warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Wool rugs save energy by reducing heat loss through floors.

Wool rugs are available in different colors and designs. Usually it depends on the type of fibers as to what designs are made. So if you are looking for recreating your house, don't look past a nice rug. It will add a touch of beauty to your room and you can relax and chill in your room while other people can admire.
